Gaiwan, white, 2019

This lidded receptacle and orbiting components are the artists take on traditional Chinese designs and are meant for steeping tea and gradually releasing its aroma. The ceremonial tea set, known as Gaiwan, has been used for centuries. The timeless design itself speaks to the calculated art of tea brewing and the spiritual practices embedded in the objects.

Nancy Kwon, b. 1988, Los Angeles, lives and works in Los Angeles. She creates work in clay and draws inspiration from nature and the historical use of ceramics — particularly within the context of early human civilizations and objects of ritual and ceremonial purpose. Kwon received a BFA in film from Pratt Institute in New York, and an MFA in Media Design Practices from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.
