Sonora Desert, May, 2018

In her photographic practice, Alana Celii explores how landscapes are layered with memory and can double as metaphors for personal history. Celii’s Paradise Falling project captures the grandeur of wide ranging landscapes, alongside intimate portraits and vibrant still lifes, paired with vignettes of writing ruminating on loss. Published in 2020, Paradise Falling is "a photo album of my last decade—my travels, my desires, my failures,” as Celii notes.

This photograph from Celii's Paradise Falling series depicts a Saguaro cactus in front of a faded backdrop of its native Sonoran Desert.

Alana Celii (b. 1986) lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Currently, she's a photo editor and researcher working in tech. Previously, she was an editor at The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and TIME. Her work has been published in numerous publications and exhibited internationally in cities including Athens, Berlin, Istanbul, London, Los Angeles, New York, Sydney, and Toronto.
