Untitled (pink), III, 2017

This series of abstract paintings by Leanne Shapton is stripped back to a sparse interplay of shape, gesture, and transparency. Their abstraction offers an insight into the artistic discipline that permeates her entire oeuvre, but is often veiled behind other subject matter. A simple directness is evident in their execution—here Shapton prioritizes immediacy, spontaneity, purity. As though a method for digesting the visual information she collects day to day, and a means of honing her craft through tireless repetition, the resulting pictures distill the skilled precision with which Shapton perceives and processes the world around her.
