Woman and reptile, 2020

A renowned composer and Jazz vocalist in her own right, Cécile McLorin Salvant has a parallel visual arts practice, producing works that range from large-scale textiles to hand-drawn animation and unique drawings on paper. These ink and watercolor works reflect a commingling of Salvant’s visual and aural language—mining her huge repository of experiences and references, whose influences range freely across time and space, and curating them into eclectic new arrangements. The resulting works enable a playful, improvised viewing experience akin to that of the musical journeys Salvant takes listeners on—unearthing lost memories, evoking humorous interplays and suggesting new lyrical possibilities.

Cécile McLorin Salvant, b. 1989, Miami, lives and works in New York. Salvant has received three Grammy Awards and a nomination for four of her albums, and won the Thelonius Monk competition in 2010. In 2020, Salvant created Yolk, a virtual cross-disciplinary performance space that features her own animation, compositions, and music, in collaboration with dancers, visual artists, musicians, and actors from around the world.
