Widely known for his photographic practice, Roe Ethridge subverts traditional genres in his multi-disciplinary work, assembling and disassembling imagery and motifs that feel at once familiar and generic. Ethridge often brings personal elements into his works as seen in this piece, which features a photograph of a charcoal tombstone from a cemetery in Martha’s Vineyard taken by his son.
This work is part of Ethridge’s newly titled collection Polychronic, stated in the artist’s words as: “Polychronic means to do more than one thing at a time. It’s also a way to describe a cultural notion of time. In the moment, it feels like we are all polychronic by choice or by necessity.”
Roe Ethridge, b. 1969, Miami, lives and works in New York. Ethridge’s work has been shown internationally at the Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Biennial, New York; Barbican Centre, London; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and Lyon Biennale, among others. Solo exhibitions include those at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; Foam, Amsterdam; Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati; Le Consortium, Dijon, France; and Museum Leuven, Belgium.
