This is one of two compositions in this series that depict flora and butterflies from the Florida Museum of Natural History. Koch’s collections of many distinct drawings on each page of her torn-out journal sketches have a visual language similar to that of vintage tattoo flash sheets. In fact, Koch has used the pages as such, translating many of the drawings in this series into hand-poked tattoos.
Each composition in the series of which this work is a part, is comprised of multiple drawing studies from individual museum collections. These compositions display enlightening affinities between various art objects and reveal Koch's keen eye. Through the drawings we are also given insight into Koch’s influences, process and the development of her own iconography. Making their world premiere at Picture Room, these drawings are a rare window into the artist’s private journals.
Aidan Koch, b. 1988, Seattle, WA, is an artist and graphic novelist who lives and works in Landers, California. Her solo exhibitions include those at 14A Galerie, Hamburg; Signal Gallery, Brooklyn; Open Space, Baltimore; Weekends, London; and Park View/Paul Solo in Los Angeles. She has shown work in group exhibitions at The Whitney Museum of American Art, Hester Gallery, and Company in New York; DREI, Cologne; Galerie Patrick Seguin, Paris; and more.
