"The tenderness and invisible thread that has tied me and my daughter is what guided these works; and the feeling of her completely at rest and ease in my arms. Every role in life takes time to settle into and with my third (and last) baby here, and my only daughter, I finally feel at home in the role of “mother”. This new found presence has opened up insight into the intimacy of growing, birthing, and holding another human being that I have finally allowed to enter my work as an artist and painter. Allowing these raw moments of intimacy to come through my paint brush makes visible that invisible thread." -Rachel Schultz
Rachel Schultz (b. 1992, Manhattan) was surrounded by paints and canvas at a young age with her mother working for Oliphant Studio, where they paint large backdrops for iconic NYC photoshoots and events. She went on to study Psychology and Studio Art at St. Olaf College and refined her painting practice at Boston's School of The Museum of Fine Arts. Her practice spans various subject matter; from domestic scenes to the purely abstract and ethereal. Poetic and lyrical mark making are a constant in both her large scale oil paintings and her miniature watercolors; blending images from her own life along with inspiration from literature, mythological symbolism, and the female figure. Her paintings pull the viewer in and out of reality, both in process and in the final works a back-and-forth of abstract and representational underlies each piece. The results are fluctuations of intimate subtleties and bold gestures, always rewarding the attentive viewer with definitive strokes and contemplative color palettes. A hum of psychological and existential questions lie beneath each seemingly innocent and tender work. Schultz works between NYC and St. Paul, MN.
