Papeles V, Madrid, 2023

Using kozo and mitsumata fiber washi paper made during a residency in Shikoku, Japan, the Papeles series is an exploration of what Guerrero describes as the “diffusing elements in nature.” Shifting effects of opacity and transparency, precision and expression are achieved through the layering of different paints and fiber textures. Guerrero uses this delicate balance between chance and intention to express our perception of transient elemental phenomena, such as fog, smoke or the feeling of being submerged in water.

Blanca Guerrero, b. 1990, Madrid, is a visual artist who currently lives and works in Madrid, and was formerly based in Brooklyn. Guerrero was raised in New York City and holds a BFA in Printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her minimalist approach is influenced by architecture and her own avid photography practice. Guerrero’s work has been exhibited internationally in New York, Spain, and Japan.
