passing florals, 2022

In this work by Rachel Schultz, large, sequential gestures unfold intuitively across the page in duo-tones. Schultz offers up a figural landscape amongst which emotions and relations can linger, or transit. Here amongst the field of figures, the artist appears to be seeking, rehearsing, and apprehending a moment of essential human recognition — an impulsive yet concentrated expression of gesture.

Rachel Schultz, b. 1992, New York, is an artist based in Saint Paul, MN. With her floral studies and figurative works, Schultz explores subtle changes in domestic scenes around her, asking the viewer to bear witness to the unfolding drama of domesticity, with its fluctuations of vitality, repose, and decay. She often employs a buoyant palette, poetic mark making, and intuitive forms. Schultz also works as Creative Associate at Minnesota-based boutique Idun, and is studying for an MPA Public & Nonprofit Management & Policy at NYU.
