Pop Architektur, 1969

This rare poster was printed by Droste, Dusseldorf in 1969 to promote the original German edition of the anthology Pop Architektur, edited by Fluxus artists Dick Higgins and Wolf Vostell. The book presented an eclectic survey of projects, texts, and ideas exploring the intersection of Modernist architecture and Pop art. With contributions by Claes Oldenburg, Kurt Schwitters, Carolee Schneemann, Joseph Beuys, John Cage and Buckminster Fuller, among many others, Pop Architektur anticipated Conceptual art’s emergent relationship to Postmodern architecture in the 1970s. Unfolding to poster size, this double-sided print is an enlarged version of the book cover’s image, with German text and image excerpts reprinted verso.

Dick Higgins, b. 1938 – d. 1998, was a composer, poet, print maker, and co-founder of the Fluxus movement. Born in England, but raised in the United States, he founded Something Else Press in 1963 and after John Cage, pioneered electronic correspondence as an art medium.

Wolf Vostell, b. 1932 – d. 1998, was a German painter and sculptor. Considered one of the early adopters of video and installation art, Vostell was among the first Happenings artists, and a co-founder of Fluxus.
