Constellating an array of imagery in a single view, this pencil, watercolour and gouache work by Aidan Koch is a further abstraction of her impressionistic comics. Rather than an explicit chronicle of events, however, this work assembles individual elements as a kind of index of characters and themes. Here Koch self-curates disparate motifs, playing on the viewer’s impulse to complete a narrative. Fragments are grouped together in a neutral field, relationships are alluded to, scale distorted, symbols introduced, styles mixed, landscape suggested at, and stories prompted by hints of text. Resisting predetermination and fixed meaning, instead Koch creates a space for moods, emotional states and passages of transition to exist in an ambivalent, evolving manner.
Aidan Koch, b. 1988, Seattle, WA, is an artist and graphic novelist who lives and works in Landers, California. Her solo exhibitions include those at 14A Galerie, Hamburg; Signal Gallery, Brooklyn; Open Space, Baltimore; Weekends, London; and Park View/Paul Solo in Los Angeles. She has shown work in group exhibitions at The Whitney Museum of American Art, Hester Gallery, and Company in New York; DREI, Cologne; Galerie Patrick Seguin, Paris; and more.
