Sketch for an infidel 1, 2024

This drawing was created in preparation for the exhibition Infidels, a new series of ceramic sculptures by London-based artist Phoebe Collings-James on view at SculptureCenter in New York from June 27 – August 12, 2024. In Infidels, she explores the relationships between heresy, faith, and orthodoxies of religion, state, and society. Each of Collings-James’ sculptures elaborates on the position of the heretic as a transmitter of incendiary speech, opposition from within, and ostracisation. The sculptures forms comprise of a bell- or vessel-like form with protruding parts that look like craning necks, mouths, or pipes growing from their heads. Together these works appear cacophonous, as instruments playing themselves, and at the same time, they are anthropomorphic, to be read as figures singing or lamenting, and even zoomorphic, with swan-like necks.

Phoebe Collings-James, b. 1987, lives and works in London. She has shown work internationally, including exhibitions at the Studio Museum in Harlem, 315 Gallery, New York; Arcadia Missa, London; the Venice Biennale; Liste Art Fair, Basel; and most recently a solo show at Camden Art Centre. Collings-James has had performances and screenings at the Getty Museum, Los Angeles; Sonic Acts, Amsterdam; Café Oto, London; and Palais de Tokyo, Paris. She has released original productions with SERAFINE369 and Takuroku Records. Collings-James’ Mudbelly ceramics studio encompasses a shop and a teaching facility offering free ceramics courses for Black people in London, taught by Black ceramicists.
