String Two, produced exclusively for Picture Room, is a poem divided across four parts. The continuous string of words overlap by two or more letters, simultaneously tumbling in and out of one another. Characteristic of the style of “visual poetry” Kostelanetz championed since the 1970s, the string of words is composed as a spiral prompting the poem to be held in the hand, turned and read. The result is a rhythmic, syncopated puzzle that pivots on the pure pleasure of language and the aesthetic potential of words.
Richard Kostelanetz, b. 1940, is a writer, artist, critic and editor. His mediums include prints, books, sound, and film. He lives and works in New York.
