Alana Celii explores how landscapes are layered with memory and can double as metaphors for personal history. Following a formative trip to California, Celii has focused on the sweeping deserts of the Southwest and National Parks of the West Coast in particular as spaces for contemplating the natural world and self.
This photograph was taken in Lake Elsinore while on assignment for the New York Times. Alongside Daniel Dorsa, Celii was documenting the "superbloom" of wildflowers that took place in the Spring of 2023 after an unusual rainy season.
Alana Celii (b. 1986) lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Currently, she's a photo editor and researcher working in tech. Previously, she was an editor at The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and TIME. Her work has been published in numerous publications and exhibited internationally in cities including Athens, Berlin, Istanbul, London, Los Angeles, New York, Sydney, and Toronto.
