Mirror Girl by Lauren Cook

Picture Room welcomes Lauren Cook for the launch of their first book of poetry, Mirror Girl. Published by Art Baby Gallery and printed in Brooklyn, Mirror Girl is 60 pages filled with diaristic reflections. Written solely in paragraph form, Cook’s unapologetic tone effortlessly opens a window, or 'mirror,' into the author’s mind. To celebrate the release, Cook invites artists and poets Kelly Surdo and Alexx Marie Valencia to Picture Room to read alongside them. Kelly Surdo uses art as a practice of day to day compassion and empathy. Working through multiple mediums, including video performance, poetry, and photography, she works under the belief that “to be a feminized body is to know you are always being watched. To take a self portrait is to take control of the watching.” Alexx Marie Valencia recently received BFAs in Sculpture and Extended Media, as well as in Painting and Printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University. She will read poems and a short fictional narrative.

Lauren Cook is from Upstate NY.

Kelly Surdo makes and lives in New York.

Alexx Marie Valencia was born Alexandra Marie Valencia in 1992. She grew up in Southern Maryland, fifteen minutes from Seneca Creek State Park.
