Judith Braun’s work is defined by her self-imposed constraints of abstraction, symmetry, and a black and white palette. These simple rules propagate myriad possibilities across her practice, under the umbrella title of Symmetrical Procedures. The artist explains that abstraction and symmetry embody her philosophy of freedom through discipline; anything can become something within this system. Drawings with similar elements coalesce into groups such as Orbitals and Lanternals, with these groups then evolving and informing one another. These graphite pencil drawings are carefully hand drawn, but not perfect, allowing for natural idiosyncrasies and inviting slow observation.
Judith Braun, b. 1947, lived and worked in New York City for most of her career but has recently returned to her hometown of Albany, NY. Braun has exhibited widely, nationally and internationally – including solo exhibitions at White Columns, the Chrysler Museum of Art, and Joe Sheftel Gallery – and has done many private commissions. Her work has been reviewed in the New York Times, the Brooklyn Rail, and Hyperallergic, among others.
